The Leading Countries

I have been continuing with my research about the different systems of organ transplant and the results are very interesting! The top two leading countries with the most organ donations per million is Spain, with 35.3 donors, and Croatia, with 34.4 donors. These two countries both follow the same simple procedure when it comes to organ donation. It actually started with Spain adopting the Opt Out system and simply implementing the role of an intensive care specialist that is fully aware of the various opportunities to gain donors and follow the right protocols to protect organs and tissues. This plan has simply become known as the Spanish model and not too long after Spain's success, Croatia climbed aboard and followed the Spanish model. They are the only two countries in the world that have implemented this type of system and displayed such high numbers in donations. I find it really interesting that this model is built solely on the act of spreading awareness of organ and tissue donation.

Now that I have researched about what type of systems work and do not work, I will keep researching what I can. I will, however, also start pulling all of my information together in a sort of neat way to be able to simply convey my message to other people about spreading awareness of the need for donations and that with the current policy, it is not being done effectively and efficiently. While I am at it, I will also try to find some more people that have been donors or recipients of a transplant. That part will be a little difficult for me because I have no idea how to start looking for people in my area that have done any sort of transplant or donation.

  1. Hi Vicky,

I really like how far you have come with this and I'm really hoping that your research is successful. If you need any help, maybe you can get in contact with some hospitals and ask if you can interview any of the patients?

  2. I think this is an awesome idea that you have! You can probably work together with hospitals and other people who have a similar goal as you. Are there specific ways that you have thought of spreading awareness? There is the social media, but there is also personal one-on-one interactions that might make people listen. You can hand out pamphlets in front of grocery stores or something.

  3. Hey this project is pretty cool! I think you should create a facebook page and we can follow you to spread the message! I am very proud that your shared your own personal experience with organ donation and hopefully you will succeed!

  4. Hey Vicky.

This project is definitely really cool! However, your mandate seems to be a bit touchy. What if people don't wish to donate due to some pre existing medical condition? Also, what is your method to store all these organs?

  5. Hey Vicki! I really like the idea of your project. I think it's great that your topic hits home on a personal level. I'm a little confused as to what your final product will be? Are you just doing research now? Maybe you could go into hospitals and see who is in need of a liver transplant!

  6. I really like where this project is heading! I think it's great that you're spreading awareness for the need of organ donors. Like Shahnoor mentioned, making a Facebook page would help you gain a wider audience. Maybe also try making a Twitter so you can have another way to inform people with updates? :)
